ITEM 12: Signed and Numbered Print of Centennial Watercolor (Value: $110)

In 2005, the School of Pharmacy and Health Professions commissioned an original watercolor painting to commemorate the School’s 100 years providing exceptional healthcare education.  The artist chosen to create the watercolor was Madalyn Bruning, a well-known local artist with a studio at the Hot Shops Art Center in Downtown Omaha.  The inspiration for the piece was the mosaic medallion in the atrium of the Hixson Lied Science Complete.  The circular design of the painting contains imagery that depicts who we are as a school.  Anchored by the School’s medallion, the piece ties the past with the future using images of one of the University’s oldest pieces of architecture (St. John’s Church) and one of its newest (Hixson-Lied Science Complex).  Threaded through the imagery are ribbons in the professional degree colors for the programs the School is currently enrolling.  These colors are olive green for the degree of doctor of pharmacy, teal for doctor of physical therapy, and ink blue for doctor of occupational therapy.  The medallion reflects the professional goals, aspirations and values common to the occupational therapy, physical therapy and pharmacy programs.  The ionic-style columns represent the learning and scholarly inquiry that characterize the academy.  The central figure with up-stretched arms represents triumph over infirmity and disability, affirms a commitment to human dignity, and celebrates the resiliency of the human spirit.  The rays in the background signify hope, healing and the anticipation of positive therapeutic outcomes from occupational therapy, physical therapy and pharmacy-related patient care.
